Pakistan will not underestimate Sri Lanka, says Azhar Ali
RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Cricket Team Test skipper Azhar Ali said on Tuesday that the green shirts will not underestimate Sri Lanka as the two sides set out to lock the horns starting tomorrow (Wednesday) in the first test match.
Holding a press conference, Azhar said it was important for him to lead the way and score big against Sri Lanka.
“As captain, I have to lead the team by example, so I’m going to try my best to score a big score and perform well so we can win,” he said.
In response to a question, Azhar said that the final play XI would be selected, keeping in mind the pitch conditions on the day of the match. Azhar said that, given the changing weather, it was crucial for Pakistan to win the toss to get off to a better start.
“As a result of the changing weather, the toss will be crucial for us. Playing XI would then be decided on the conditions, of course, but I have a say on the matter,” he said.
He said it was important for green shirts not only to score runs against the Sri Lankans, but also to deal with pressure.
“We need to be able to act against them and manage the pressure at the same time. We can’t do it if we can’t handle the pressure,” said the 34-year-old.
Pakistan will enter the first test game, fresh from a humiliating series against Australia, where they lost both innings to defeat. In the second test match, Pakistan lost an inning to Australia and 48 runs after the batsmen’s green shirts blew up and his bowlers were unable to register impressive performances against the Aussies.
Azhar had conceded that Pakistan was outstripped by Australia after the second test match defeat, but said that the team had taken positive action from the series. He said Pakistan had been outplayed in all three sections of the game against Australia in the series.
After the first test, Pakistan will take on Sri Lanka in the second match that will take place in Karachi from 19-23 December.
